THE Rural Electrification Authority (REA) has partnered with four Constituencies to utilise part of the Constituency Development Funds (CDF) on implementation of Priority Electrification Projects (PREPS).

The Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) signed with Town Councils will cover Katombora constituency in Kazungula district, Magoye and Mazabuka Central Constituencies in Mazabuka District and Siavonga Constituency in Siavonga District.

Speaking during the signing ceremony held at Mazabuka Town Council on Friday 8th September 2023, REA Chief Executive Eng. Linus Chanda said the partnerships marked the beginning of a journey towards improving lives of those without access to electricity.

He said the projects that will be undertaken were prioritized by the Constituency Development committees in conjunction with their local authorities.

Eng. Chanda noted that the collaboration would enhance joint financing of projects to leverage two funding streams and enhance the capacity to reduce the lead time for electrifying communities.

He also thanked the councils for committing to working with REA in advancing Government’s aspirations towards developing the energy sector.

“Development can’t take place without electricity therefore the MoU will enable councils realise many benefits since increased access to electricity will lead to higher productivity and improved livelihoods in their jurisdictions.” He said.

Speaking at the same event, Mazabuka Town Clerk Judith Mukwita Maambo said the development is a right step towards addressing challenges facing people in accessing electricity.

And Southern Province Local Government Officer Charlston Hamulyata said the partnership agreements have brought hope to people in rural areas especially those wishing to venture in business.

Further, at the same occasion, Kazungula Deputy Council Secretary Misheck Sing’ambwa commended Government for allowing councils to use CDF to electrify rural areas.

“Potential is there but lack of power supply has affected people but we shall attain meaningful development with power connectivity,” he said.

The event was held at the Mazabuka Council Chamber and witnessed by Councilors from various wards in Mazabuka District.
