In Ilendela Community in Nakonde District of Muchinga Province, nights were once marked by the dim glow of candles and kerosene lamps. Shops closed early, schoolchildren struggled to study after sunset, and health workers delivered babies under torchlight.

This has changed instantly since the Rural Electrification Authority (REA) switched on electricity in Ilendela, completing the 2024 Grid Extension Project (GEP). The K4.8m project was executed by Zariah Investments Limited, and constructed over 10 kilometers of high-tension lines, six kilometers of medium-voltage lines, and installed four transformers.

This project which was completed ahead of schedule is providing electricity to 120 structures including public and private structures such as New Nakonde Boarding School, Iwula Primary School and Rural Health Centre, Ilendela Market, and nearby villages.

REA Regional Manager – Northern, Eng. Partie Kabango, urged residents to take pride in the project and protect it for future generations.

“We urge residents to take full ownership of this project and report anyone found vandalizing power lines, transformers, or other installations. Protecting this infrastructure is the only way to ensure that it continues to serve the community for many years to come,” said Eng. Kabango.
