More than 100 households and key public facilities in Kawama, Mukulaikwa and Chinchebu in Shibuyunji District of Central Province are set to receive electricity for the first time following the completion of the Kawama 2024 Grid Intensification Project.

The Government of Zambia, through REA’s 2024 Work Plan and Budget, implemented the project carried over into 2025 at a cost of over K4.6 million, executed by Lamusa Company Limited.

“The Kawama project is a clear example of REA and the Government’s commitment to connecting rural Zambia to the national grid and ensuring that communities are not left behind in the country’s development journey,” said REA Acting Chief Executive Officer, Eng. Alex Mbumba.

The project involved the construction of 10 kilometres of 400V overhead lines to connect Kawama Primary School, Mukulaikwa Rural Health Centre and surrounding households. In total, about 115 beneficiaries will gain access to power once the line is switched on.

REA Regional Manager – Central, Eng. Lavender Kamanga, said the project is expected to bring long-term social and economic benefits, enabling improved education, healthcare delivery, and small-scale enterprise development in the area.

“Electricity will open up opportunities for entrepreneurship, enhance learning outcomes in schools, and enable health facilities to deliver services more efficiently,” said Eng. Kamanga.

The Regional Manager added that the Kawama project would also improve community safety through better lighting, reduce dependence on costly and polluting fuels, and make it easier for residents to access information and communication services.
