1 September 2021, Lusaka, Zambia - The Africa Minigrid Developers Association (AMDA) and the Rural Electrification Authority- Zambia (REA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) aimed at promoting Mini-grids and Decentralized utilities for rural electrification, associated strategies and business needs to ensure sector growth.

The MOU establishes a framework governing how AMDA and REA will cooperate to support private sector Mini-grid financing, policy, and deployment across Zambia; and establish the manner in which the parties will collaborate effectively championing electricity uptake in rural communities.

The Rural Electrification Authority has been implementing rural electrification projects throughout the country since its inception by the Rural Electrification Act No. 20 of 2003. Each year, the Authority selects projects listed in the Rural Electrification Master Plan (REMP) for implementation based on available resources provided through the Rural Electrification Fund (REF).
